Hi! I’m Simon. As a marine biologist who snorkels and dives for a living, I’m often asked what the best snorkel gear on the market is. I’ve listed this year’s top snorkel gear below. Each product listed is my overall category winner for best snorkel masks, snorkel fins, full face masks, prescription snorkel masks, and kids snorkel sets of 2026.
The best snorkeling gear for 2026 starts with the Cressi Big Eyes Evolution mask, leak-free for hours, and the easy-kicking Mares Avanti Superchannel fins. The fins still have plenty of power to duck-dive. For sun protection, the Waterlust range is what our research team snorkels in. Kids and casual floaters need their own dedicated gear rather than a shrunk-down adult kit, and fit always beats brand, so try gear on before you buy if you can.

We also have top picks for beards, narrow faces, large faces and noses in our full snorkel mask guide.
Best Snorkel Fins Mares Avanti Superchannel Snorkel Fins
Comfortable soft easy kick fins with loads of power when you need it makes the Mares Superchannel Fin our top pick.
Simon Pierce
What we like about this snorkel fin: Comfortable soft easy kick fins with loads of power when you need it makes the Mares Avanti Superchannel our top pick. We also have top performing snorkel fins for surface snorkeling, expert duck-divers and travelers in our full snorkel fins guide.
Skip it if you do lots of duck-diving or freediving and have strong legs. The stiffer Mares Avanti Quattro Power, Simon’s own fins, is in our full snorkel fins guide, and Mads switches to hers for those sessions.
Best Snorkel Swimwear Waterlust Whale Shark Collection
What we like about this snorkel swimwear: Shop their snorkel rashguards, boardshorts, leggings, sunsuits and more. Most of our whale shark research team snorkel in Waterlust gear, and we love the designs and sun protection they offer. 5% of sales from the Whale Shark Collection go to the Marine Megafauna Foundation’s global whale shark conservation projects, and it's made from recycled plastic bottles.
Simon co-founded the Marine Megafauna Foundation, which receives that donation.
Best Kids' Snorkel Set Head Youth Sea Pals Kids Snorkel Set
What we like about this kids’ snorkel set: An insanely cute Head Youth Sea Pals Kids Snorkeling Package for all ages, with lots of characters to choose from. Brilliantly designed by Mares, the leading Italian dive and snorkel manufacturer, ensuring optimal quality and performance.
The set bundles a mask, matching fins and a dry-top snorkel with a purge valve, so kids get properly fitted gear instead of a generic one-size kit. It packs into a sea-creature shaped backpack with a roll-up closure and a vented base, so wet gear can drain before it goes back in a bag.
We also have excellent options specifically for kids aged 3 to 8 and 6 and up in our full kids' snorkel set guide.
Downsides? Kids grow fast, so check the size chart carefully: a snug fit today may not last more than a season or two. Several owners report mixed quality for the price.
Best Full-Face Snorkel Mask Seaview 180 V3 Full Face Snorkel Mask
What we like about this full-face mask: The Seaview V3 180° has excellent safety standards, is designed and tested in the USA, and stands out with hundreds of reviews confirming its many features.

Why you can trust our snorkel gear guides
Simon is a shark conservation biologist and world-renowned underwater photographer who dives, snorkels and freedives for a living. He is a co-founder and Principal Scientist at the Marine Megafauna Foundation, where he leads the global whale shark research and conservation program. His marine research and photography are routinely covered by major media outlets, including the BBC, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and New York Times amongst many others. One of his photographs was chosen as a personal favourite of Sir David Attenborough’s, in conjunction with BBC’s Blue Planet II series, and another illustrates one of the global PADI scuba diving certification cards.
Mads is an avid scuba diver and recreational freediver who’s dived some of the most spectacular locations around the world, including Misool and northern Raja Ampat, Lembongan, Lembeh Strait, Tulamben, Fiji, Vanuatu, and of course at home in Australia. She’s a minimalist and likes to travel light (which Simon encourages, as he can then use her baggage allowance!!), opting to mostly hire dive and snorkel gear wherever she goes. She’s been sampling the world’s equipment for over a decade. She has opinions.

How we identified the best gear for snorkeling
We looked at all the current models from top brands globally to find the best gear for snorkeling on the market in 2026. Aside from our own personal experience with lots of different snorkel masks, Madeleine spent hours watching YouTube reviews and product explainers, arguing with Simon, debating with diver friends, and scouring reviews and message boards. To summarize, we:
- Snorkel and dive for a living, so know what is needed in various situations.
- Spoke to snorkeling gear retailers in both Australia and Indonesia who specialize in snorkeling, freediving, and diving.
- Interviewed marine biologists and snorkeling tour guides to get their feedback on functionality and durability.
- Chatted to dozens of other snorkelers about their gear and what’s important to them.
- Spent 65 hours doing online snorkel gear research on Amazon, then rechecked every pick, its current model name and its Amazon US listing in September 2026.
- Read thousands of reviews covering all experience levels and snorkeling needs.
- Viewed hundreds of YouTube reviews and product explainers.
I’ve also created in-depth guides for snorkel masks, snorkel fins, full face masks, prescription snorkel masks and kids snorkel sets.
What to look for
A mask that seals without the strap
Press the mask lightly to your face without the strap and inhale through your nose. It should stay put on suction alone. A soft silicone skirt that molds to your face beats brand name every time.
Fins matched to your legs and plans
Flexible fins are easier to kick for hours at the surface; stiffer fins give more power if you duck-dive. Full-foot travel fins pack smaller than open-heel designs with boots.
Sun protection that won’t wash off
A rashguard or full-length legging blocks UV without needing to reapply sunscreen, which matters on long snorkelling days in harsh sun.
A kids' set sized for a child, not a shrunk adult one
Check the size chart before you buy. A snug seal on a small face matters more than room to grow into, and oversized fins are hard for little legs to kick.
Full-face masks are for floating, not diving
They suit relaxed surface snorkelling and beginners getting comfortable in the water, but you cannot duck-dive or equalise your ears in one.
Best gear for snorkeling: your questions answered
What snorkeling gear do I need?
At minimum, a mask that fits your face, a snorkel and a pair of fins. Add a rash guard or snorkel suit for sun protection, and for children, gear sized for them rather than a small adult set. Our picks below cover each piece.
Do I need different masks and fins for snorkelling and scuba diving?
You can use a diving mask or fin for snorkelling with no problem. Snorkellers usually prefer a lower-volume mask and a softer, easier-kick fin, since you spend most of your time at the surface rather than carrying tanks at depth.
Can I duck-dive in a full-face snorkel mask?
Not really. Full-face masks like the Seaview 180 V3 are built for relaxed floating at the surface. If you want to duck-dive and explore underwater, choose a standard mask and snorkel instead, such as our top pick, the Cressi Big Eyes Evolution.
What size snorkel set should I buy for my child?
Check the maker's size chart rather than buying a size up to grow into. A mask that doesn't seal properly on a small face will leak, and oversized fins are hard to kick and can slip off.
Is snorkelling swimwear worth it over a normal swimsuit?
A rashguard or full-length legging gives sun protection that won't wash off, which matters on long days at the surface. Some collections, like Waterlust's, also put a share of sales into marine conservation.
The bottom line
Start with the Cressi Big Eyes Evolution and Mares Avanti Superchannel
They are our top picks for masks and fins: the mask is Simon's own for whale shark fieldwork, and Mads tested the fins against the stiffer Quattro Power. For sun protection it's the Waterlust Whale Shark Collection, for kids the Head Youth Sea Pals set, and for relaxed surface floating the Seaview 180 V3.
